i586-pc-linux-gnu/sh-hitachi-hms cross won't build

Guys:

Make that, "... ON a virgin Redhat 6.0 setup...".  In other words, I took a new
hard drive, installed RH6.0 (complete install, including developer libraries),
and then immediately started building binutils and egcs...

I did not, however, install or use the self-help-improve-your-typing utilities.
