Crosscompiling doubts

Hi,
Is there a standard way of using GNU configure to cross-compile? I'm
setting CC=i386-sco-gcc, but when the GNU configure script is "checking
if cross compiling" it answers no.
I'm using my crosscompiler for SCO (on a FreeBSD host) now and it works
fine, except when programs involve any type of networking. Is there
something I can do about it?
