custom sections in m68k-unknown-coff

   The gcc info says that "some target formats do not support
   arbitrary sections", but as far as I know, coff does!

   Has anyone used arbitrary sections in m68-coff? 
   Is there a reason why the arbitrary sections are disabled?

It's not a question of why are they disabled.
It's a question of why hasn't support for this target been added yet?
As of 2.7.2.x no one had done so.
Support is in the current development tree and will appear in 2.8.0
