CGEN depending on gas scrubbing internals

Hello,
while working on dealing with fallout from scrubber adjustments proposed
(in an early form) in [1], I came to spot this comment in
opcodes/cgen-asm.in:parse_insn_normal():
/* FIXME: We also take inappropriate advantage of the fact that
GAS's input scrubber will remove extraneous blanks. */
This comment has been around forever since the introduction of the file,
i.e. well over 20 years - are there any plans to deal with it? As it
stands for targets using cgen I can't see how to deal with there going to
survive more whitespace past scrubbing. Looking at fr30 I'm left with the
impression that ' ' in a syntax description indicates mandatory
whitespace, while there doesn't look to be any way to indicate such being
optional. Suggestions very welcome.
