Thanks for the update; with this changed, I no longer object to this
implementation getting merged.
I still don't agree that it is the most elegant solution though, but I
think this may work for you if you think this is your preferred way
forward, and it no longer defines any common interop behaviours that I
disagree with.
I'll comment separately on the updated patch.
