 FWIW I use a local build of pristine autotools with a version suffix 
appended to the respective commands and then $AUTOCONF/$AUTOM4TE envvar 
overrides to avoid this very issue when updating binutils/GDB/GCC/glibc.  
The suffix is a standard `configure' script feature, but there's a small 
modification required to the build process so that there's no pkgdatadir 
overlap between installed versions.  I can share the details if that 
helped.  It has worked for me for decades.
