Not being a "binutils maintainer" in the elevated sense that I 
think you intend, I just offer my unsolicited opinion:

And for that reason I second getting rid of them.

(Fondly remembering how I tripped up "some tool" by a binary 
patch to glibc just a couple of years ago, foolishly thinking 
that the presence of binary files there indicated that adding 
one more was ok.)
