The branch time for the 2.44 release is approaching

No, my plan - for this release - is to leave the gold sources
on the 2.44 branch but to create 3 release tarballs from this
branch:

   binutils-2.44             (does not have gold)
   binutils-2.44-plus-gold   (equivalent of the old binutils release tarballs)
   binutils-2.44-only-gold   (just gold for those who only want that)

Assuming that this does not cause mass panic and world wide
catastrophies after the release goes out then for the next
release (2.45) I plan to drop the gold sources from the branch
and the tarballs, but for the release after that (2.46) to
include gold again.  So gold will be branched/released once
a year whilst the rest of the binutils will be branched/released
twice a year.

If that all works then probably sometime next year I shall propose
dropping the gold release altogether and see what happens.
