Good, I'll try to get to dealing with this. You leave unaddressed
the x86-64 side of the question though; unless I hear otherwise
I'll imply that consistent changes are to be made there as well.

I'm unsure whether I'm going to try to also deal with some of the
other targets I'm at least halfway familiar with. x86's testsuite
coverage is comparably good, so is more likely to spot mistakes
made (or even just unexpected fallout) ...
