Hm, I reluctantly have to agree; now, working outside my
autotester setup which has remained the same since about 2004
(using your options minus --with-system-zlib for -m32 as I don't
have the system libz-32 nor can find out the debian
zlib-dev-32-name and thinking the in-tree libz is preferable for
serious testing anyway) I can reproduce your non-reproduction,
both with and without -m32.

I'll have to investigate this on my side.
