Hmmm, there's a win for gcc vs. clang.  I have just been building with
the default configuration on my MacBook host.  I have installed
various versions of gcc in the past, but needed to let clang impose
itself as gcc again due to some problem in MacPorts or some other
situation that I don't recall now.  Perhaps I should install gcc 9.3.1
and specifically select it for this work.
