(FYI: neither this nor the fixups need review, they're just for
information: I'll be pushing later today once I've done a bit more
testing. Newly added to the test matrix: 32-bit freebsd, 32-bit cygwin,
64-bit mingw, and a cygwin64 -> linux cross.)
