hijacking the 'l' option leads to build failures.

In 2.35 it's documented as:

       l   This modifier is accepted but not used.

at least the build fails in

I don't know about the history of this modifier, but giving it a completely new
meaning is odd.

In about a week I can give you a list of packages from a distribution test
rebuild, failing to build because of this.
