output file specifier ?

Is there some reason that the binutils that generate copious stdout output
(nm and objdump, in particular) don't have a command-line option to specify
an output file (other than stdout)?  "--output" would work.

This would allow programs that are too dumb to set up stdout to use the
binutils to create listings/etc in a more system-independent method than
running a shell.
