 Well, in case I didn't make it completely clear, I wasn't really serious, 
but somehow it took the combination of that released compiler, the trusty 
old box where I have enough pieces installed to run DejaGNU and native 
testing to only trigger the exception -- if it did not for anyone else 
making this piece survive so long, then it looks like not the usual 
scenario.  The version checker is in generic code -- is it only used for 
native MIPS platforms?  How odd...
