[PATCH 0/9] microMIPS ASE prerequisite and related changes

Hi,

 I decided to split changes that not comprise microMIPS ASE support itself 
off from the main patch.  This is mainly so that bug fixes and loosely 
related changes are not buried within a large blob, stalled on ongoing 
review and are easier to track down later on.

 All these changes have passed regression testing on mips-sde-elf and 
mips-linux-gnu targets.
