linker error on shared object: sleep: invalid version 3 (max 0)

I'd appreciate your help in solving this.

The error message I'm getting is:

I'm building GhostScript 8.64 using GCC 4.4.0 on Solaris 10 / Sparc.

The build of gs went through fine.

Next, I executed
      make so
which is supposed to build libgs.so, gsc and gsx
(a shared object version of GhostScript and two example 
programs which use that shared object)

The libgs.so built without error but the linker failed as above.

Is something wrong in the way the libgs.so was built?

This is what I noticed is the differnce between the reference to
the sleep in executable gs and the libgs.so:

$ /usr/ccs/bin/nm bin/gs|egrep 'Size.*Type|sleep'
[Index]   Value      Size    Type  Bind  Other Shndx   Name

What is wrong and how do I correct it?
