  I would suggest that the patch at

    http://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2008-12/msg00316.html

fixes a regression, in that the patch it updates

    http://sourceware.org/ml/binutils/2002-11/msg00317.html

was implemented in a way that inadvertently affected things it wasn't supposed
to (libtool convenience libraries).  But that's a very long-standing bug, so
you might not think it important enough to bother the branch with; it's
certainly not something that's bitten an awful lot of people.  (Only me, as
far as I can tell!)
