This is actually a local change in Ubuntu (it appears Ubuntu 8.10 enables 
-Wformat -Wformat-security -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -fstack-protector 
-Wl,-z,relro by default), and maybe similar changes in other 
distributions.
