symbol reduction when creating a relocatable

Hello-

I have multiple relocatable files that I would like to combine into a
single relocatable.

In the combined reloctable, I would like to reduce some symbols that
have external linkage to having static linkage.  I tried using a
linker-script with versioning information but it does not have any
effect.

Is it possible to do this?
