Help with mcmodel=medium

Some more info:

/scratch/orion/HDF4.2r3/hdf/src/dfsd.c:244: (and all of the other 
complaints as well)

     if (library_terminate == FALSE)


Declared in dfsd.c outside any function:

static int library_terminate = FALSE;

So, is gcc not handling the static variables correctly?
