Yes.

Yes.

Support for the -a profiler was removed here:

http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-patches/2001-12/msg00147.html

I believe the intent was that gcov would replace gprof when profiling
at the basic block level.  The gprof documentation should be updated
accordingly.
