Symbol versioning question with ld

Forgive me if this is a FAQ... I have been reading up on symbol versioning.
I understand how when building a library one can control symbol versions.
But when linking an application, is there a way to tell ld "use version
VERNAME for all symbols being imported from library xyz"?
