Binutils 2.17 fails `make check` on mipsel-linux-gnu

Hi All,
I'm in the process of testing some packages on a little-endian MIPS
machine (Lemote Loongson), and so far, have ran into a few problems with
various packages -- notably Mozilla Firefox and X.org.
Under both Debian/MIPS Etch and Gentoo/MIPS, with vanilla binutils
sources, the build fails at the `make test` step with the following errors:
> Running /home/stuartl/binutils-2.17/binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/objcopy.exp ...
> Version /home/stuartl/binutils-build/binutils/objcopy 2.17
> FAIL: objcopy -O srec
> ERROR: objdump can not recognize bintest.o
> ERROR: objdump can not recognize bintest.o
The bintest.o in this case, is a standard MIPS-I ELF binary object:
./binutils/tmpdir/bintest.o: ELF 32-bit LSB relocatable, MIPS, MIPS-I
version 1 (SYSV), not stripped
> FAIL: run stripped executable
> Running /home/stuartl/binutils-2.17/binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/objdump.exp ...
> Version /home/stuartl/binutils-build/binutils/objdump 2.17
> FAIL: objdump -i
> FAIL: objdump -f
> FAIL: objdump -h
> FAIL: objdump -r
> FAIL: objdump -s
> Running /home/stuartl/binutils-2.17/binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/readelf.exp ...
> Version /home/stuartl/binutils-build/binutils/readelf 2.17
> FAIL: readelf -h
> FAIL: readelf -S
> FAIL: readelf -r
Attached, is the build log from Debian Etch (bzipped to save space). I
suspect binutils misbehaving might be the cause of these problems with
these other packages.
Has anyone got any ideas what might be going wrong?
