very odd linker error GCC ld 3.4.6

Hi Dave,

Many thanks for your help.  This turned out to be a confusion
over which particular version of the file was in use.  I came into
the investigation halfway and was assured the function was there;
when I actually checked if the particular function was in the source
it wasn't.  I should have paid more attention to the U flag which
I'd seen in the output from nm on the .o, so lesson learnt there.

Sorry for the false alarm.

I've got another problem with ld (to do with -gc-sections) which I'll
post in a while.  This one is more genuine - I promise!
