removing symbol from partially linked object file

I'd be delighted to do that if I know I've hit a bug. However, the 
responses by Alan Modra and Andreas Schwab in this same thread do not 
indicate so.

Rather, they indicate that in the case I presented, I ought not expect 
symbol X to be removable for reasons related to relocation processing 
(which I accept but do not yet understand completely).

I'd hate to file a bug which turns out not to be a bug after all.

To all the experts, please help sort out the contradictory signals here.
