OK, got to the bottom of this.  Don't know how my source tree got
unwanted gmo files in it, I never use that particular copy to build
from.  But the ".cvsignore" files cause cvs to ignore them, so I never
noticed this before.  In addition, when I update, I use the cvs option
"-I\!" which should cause nothing to be ignored, but .cvsignore
apparently has a higher precedence.

Now I remember why I used to zero out the contents of any .cvsignore
files in my checked out source trees.

Sigh.  Sorry for the noise...
