Please don't use old sources.  It means that any changes you make will
need work before they can be applied to mainline CVS, thus others are
less likely to benefit from your efforts.  Also, you are less likely to
receive help, because maintainers forget (at least I do) the nitty
gritty details of how things worked in older releases.  I can't answer
your question without digging through old sources...
