Tidy up nm.c sources

Hi Guys,

  I have a change I want to post to nm.c, but before I do that I am
  going to apply the attached patch to tidy up the sources.  There are
  no code changes, just rearrangement of the order of the functions in
  order to remove the need for many of the static prototypes and the
  cleanup of a few minor formatting nits.
