upgrade question

One possible way is to download the sources for a more recent version of 
binutils (eg 2.15), run configure and then make but, rather than running 
"make install" use the checkinstall program instead:

   http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/

This will create an rpm from your built binaries and install it for you.
