[PATCH] add directive to enter/leave alternate macro mode

It just occured to me (because I got similar replies on gcc) that this
might have been meant as 'OK to commit' once updated. If that's the
case, since I don't have cvs write access, I'd need to know whether
either I should acquire such or somebody else would commit this.
