Hmmm, that's true, gas and ld shouldn't configure, but perhaps the
BFD and the binutils should.

They were all disabled with this ChangeLog entry:

2002-09-27  Geoffrey Keating  <geoffk@apple.com>

	* configure.in (powerpc-*-darwin*): Don't configure BFD, TK, or the
	things that depend on them.

and this e-mail message:

So, it's not necessarily bit-rot, per se, but it might be fairly
simple for somebody to test BFD and binutils for Mach-O and re-enable
them.
