   I would guess a bug in your version of sed or a kernel problem.  It's
   very unlikely this is a binutils bug.

Doubt that it is a bug in sed, both GNU/Linux and GNU/Hurd use the
same version (4.0.7 to be exact).  What do you mean with "a kernel
problem"?
