That's what I feared :-)

Seems to be at least somewhat consistent within the MIPS port.

True, but I didn't want to try that now to avoid opening another can of
worms.

Unfortunately, I don't have binutils write access yet.  Assignments for
binutils and gdb are on file with the FSF, and I applied for src write
access some time ago when DJ Delorie asked me to apply a couple of toplevel
configure changes to src as well, but I never heard back about that.
