To add a little more entropy to the problem, try this:
% ld -shared -o test2.so test.o test.so
It works (?). :-) No errors are reported and:
% nm test2.so
000012a4 A __bss_start
00001238 A _DYNAMIC
000012a4 A _edata
000012a4 A _end
0000022c T f
00001298 A _GLOBAL_OFFSET_TABLE_
