Assembler probelm on IA64

Hello all ,

While using the gcc of  gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Red Hat Linux 7.2 
2.96-112.7.2) for a copiling a c file ,the error is occuring as

as: unrecognized option `-x'   in IA64 pltform.

I am using the assemebler of

GNU assembler version 2.11.90.0.8 (ia64-redhat-linux) using BFD version 
2.11.90.0.8

So if u know anybody working in Ia64 ,pls help me about this.What is the 
problem and we have to solve it.
