patches for c4x

hello,

Iam facing problems applying c4x patches to binutils.
I have downloaded binutils-2.11.2.tar.gz and
binutils-2_11_1-c4x-20010623.patch.
 when I give the command 
"patch binutils-2.11.2.tar.gz
binutils-2_11_1-c4x-20010623.patch"
 it generates some files and asks for a file to patch 
what file do I have to enter here.
 infact is this how you add a patch? this is my first
attempt so please help me out
