Work-around for bug in ancient SPARC Sun C compiler

Without this patch, it's impossible to bootstrap a native toolchain
starting with an ancient SPARCompiler that doesn't take literal
constants such as 0x80000000 and 0xFFFFFFFF as unsigned numbers, which
causes them to be sign-extended instead of zero-extended in some
places. I've been using a patch very much like this for years now,
but I've finally had time to address the requests I got last time I
posted it. Ok to install?
