segmentation fault with ld option -R

Any hint of what could cause this error ??? ld was used with option -R
filename where filename was a previously linked executable that contains
hopefully all of the missing references . Platform is cygwin (release
.1.3.9) on winnt . Searching through this list I find that several others
reported the segmentation error with cygwin.

without the -R it produces missing references that i was hoping would be
picked up in the file redboot.elf

error message :
collect2: ld terminated with signal 11 [Segmentation fault]
