[PATCH] basename buffer gets spammed in `ld'

Ok, then.  Approved for head.  I don't recall the branch checkin
rules, but if I'm allowed to approve it, it's approved for that also.
Nick - can we add a "current branches and checkin rules" section on
the binutils web page?
