Preferred format of Copyright statement (Patch enclosed)

Forgive me if I seem to be the special nosy/nerving one.

But why are we required to keep each modification year? Wouldn't a range
(like 1989-2001) also do it? Or what would be the advantages to track each year
seperatly?
