How about just not supporting core files on your system ?  

Ie just change your patch to:

  i[3456]86-*-netbsd* | i[3456]86-*-openbsd*)
    COREFILE=netbsd-core.lo
    ;;
  i[3456]86-*-bsdi*)
    COREFILE=
    ;;

(Yours is a "bsdi" system isn't it ?).
