x86-64 support for gas part I

Do we care?  A couple of months ago, I submitted a patch to fix one
such problem in some sparc-related file that was preventing bootstraps
with an old SPARCompiler, but it was either rejected or simply ignored
(I don't remember for sure).  Should I re-post it?
