Static linking problems on Alpha...

I'm having difficulty with linking a binary statically on the target
alpha-unknown-linux-gnu. It seems to be present in several Alphas that I
have access to. Ld segfaults when executed by gcc. When running by hand
(was linking a static 'tar' binary):

ld: Warning: size of symbol `main' changed from 3132 to 1296 in tar.o
  Segmentation fault

Also, ld's testsuite fails on the static linking test (ld-bootstrap):

  FAIL: bootstrap with --static

Is anyone else seeing this or could this be related to glibc 2.1.2?

  My system details:
	Alpha 533MHz 164SX
	128MB RAM
	Debian Linux (potato)
glibc 2.1.2 (compiled with egcs 1.0.3 due to lack of complex
support in gcc 2.95.1 on Alpha)
	gcc 2.95.1

Thanks!
C
