--enable-maintainer-mode

   is --enable-maintainer-mode supposed to work?  i'm trying it on a
   binutils from 1999-05-25.  aclocal fails with 

   aclocal: configure.in: 19: macro `AM_DISABLE_SHARED' not found in library
   aclocal: configure.in: 21: macro `AM_PROG_LIBTOOL' not found in library

   i have
     automake (GNU automake) 1.4
     Autoconf version 2.13

   i have also tried current versions of both autoconf and automake from
   the cvs repository of today (1999-06-22):
     automake (GNU automake) 1.4a
     Autoconf version 2.13.1

--enable-maintainer-mode does work.  However, in order to use it for
the snapshots, you really need the Cygnus development versions of the
following tools:
    autoconf
    automake
    libtool
    gettext

I've put a gettext snapshot on sourceware.cygnus.com in pub/binutils.
I'll put snapshots of the other tools there later.
