not[. = mytag/mytext]
That selects all <not> elements whose character data to any deph equals
the character data of its mytag/mtext children.
so it would select
<not><x/><mytag><mytext>bbb</mytext><mytag><not>
as in both cases the string value is ~bbb".
If used in a predicate, like
<xsl:if test = "not(. = mytag/mytext)">
then the predicate is considered true if teh xpath selects any nodes.
So that if is tru if the current node has any <not> children of that
form.
not(. = mytag/mytext)
is a boolean valued expression which is true if the string value of teh
current node is not equal to the sting value of any of its mytag/mytext
children. not() is a function not a test for an element called not.
