A large part of the principles of this might be gleaned from
Norm Walsh's stylesheets for docbook.
Under the common directory in the distribution you'll find
templates which are used across both fo and html and xhtml output.
I've used a xsl:choose approach in one point where I was
creating output for an XML and html output. It is messy.
