yes you can Peter.
<xsl:for-each select ="id(@idref)">
<!-- changes context to the target node -->
<xsl:number ...... />
</xsl:for-each>
use number in the way you wanted.
Or be really smart and use the docbook style, where it gets
the title as well as the number!
