<xsl:if test="not(parent::field/preceding::field)">
...</xsl:if>
will test true if the parent is not a field or if the parent field has no
field elements preceding it (meaning among the elements that open and close
before it, which doesn't include its ancestors).
"not(../preceding-sibling::field)" is almost the same test, and is
preferable from some points of view. In particular, you should use
preceding-sibling if you know all your field elements will be at the same
level.
Cheers,
Wendell
