msxsl command line transformation trouble

hello,
using the msxsl command line transformation tool seems to be working ok,
with the exception of one thing. the output (both to standard out and to
a file) contains a control character between every other character. i'd
appreciate any help at all. see below:
oh yeah - i'm using msxml3 as my parser.
